They revolutionized women’s freedom. But what have they done to our health?
For decades, tampons have been celebrated for giving women freedom, comfort, and confidence. But recent research is pulling back the curtain on something far more troubling.
A new study tested tampons for toxins—and the results were shocking. Researchers found levels of glyphosate, a toxic herbicide, at 40 times the safe limit for drinking water. Yes, forty. Glyphosate is not only classified as carcinogenic, it's also been linked to Parkinson’s disease, liver inflammation, and fertility issues.
And if that weren’t enough, here are some other findings from previous research:
⚠️ Heavy metals - such as lead and arsenic. Both have been linked to cancer, sensory neuropathy, kidney damage, neurological damage and more.
⚠️Styrene - The World Health Organization classifies styrene as a carcinogen.
⚠️Chloromethane - The EPA says short-term exposure to high concentrations of chloromethane can have neurological effects.
⚠️Dioxin - a byproduct of chlorine-bleaching process. Dioxin is a group of highly toxic chemicals that are harmful for health - can cause problems with fertility and reproduction, immune system, it can disrupt hormones and lead to cancer.
⚠️Bisphenol A known as - BPA! It’s known as disrupting the function of hormone-releasing endocrine glands, particularly in fetuses and babies.
These substances are being absorbed through the vaginal wall—one of the most delicate and absorbent tissues in the body—and sent straight into the bloodstream, skipping the body’s usual detox systems. With 50%–80% of women using tampons regularly, we have to ask: Why aren’t we talking about this? Why aren't girls taught to question what's in these products? Despite what we've known in holistic circles for years, these products are still on store shelves—unlabeled, unregulated, and under-discussed.
As a Holistic Nutritionist specializing in fertility and women’s health, I believe we all deserve transparency and choices that support long-term wellness.
Knowledge is power—and informed choices are how we reclaim our health.
Ready to make the switch? Here are a few ways to reduce your exposure:
• Choose certified organic cotton tampons – free from pesticides and harmful chemicals.
• Look for unscented, unbleached products – fragrance and chlorine bleaching can introduce unnecessary toxins.
• Try menstrual cups or organic reusable pads – great for sustainability and hormone-safe living.
• Use apps or online directories like EWG’s Skin Deep to check product safety.
• Talk to your practitioner – whether it’s a holistic nutritionist (hi!) or integrative doctor, ask for guidance.
Every small step adds up when it comes to protecting your health and future fertility.
